What Is Selank Peptide?
Selank is a heptapeptide, seven amino acids long, with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. The first four amino acids are tuftsin, a short peptide cut naturally from the heavy chain of immunoglobulin G and known for its role in immune signalling. The last three, Pro-Gly-Pro, were added to protect the chain from rapid breakdown by enzymes.
It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and it is one of a small family of Russian regulatory peptides built on the same stabilising principle. Its best-known relative is Semax, which carries the same Pro-Gly-Pro tail on a different starting fragment.
What Does Selank Do? How Selank Works in Research
Selank is studied mainly for its effects on anxiety-related behaviour and on the immune system, almost entirely in animal and cell models. The main lines of research are:
- GABA signalling. Studies report that selank modulates the GABAergic system, the brain's main inhibitory network and the target of classic anti-anxiety drugs, which is why it is often described as an anxiolytic peptide.
- Enkephalin breakdown. Selank has been reported to inhibit enzymes that degrade enkephalins, the body's own opioid peptides, prolonging their activity.
- Immune signalling. Reflecting its tuftsin origin, selank has been studied for effects on cytokines such as interleukin-6.
- Gene expression. Several papers examine how selank changes the expression of genes involved in neurotransmission and inflammation.

Selank is best known in nasal form: in Russia it is registered as a medicine in the form of intranasal drops, and that is where most searches for selank nasal spray, selank spray and intranasal selank come from.
